Freeland did not ease after defeating defending Tri-Valley Conference champion Essexville Garber.
Thursday at Freeland, the Falcons defeated Birch Run 8-0 in a TVC girls soccer match, improving their conference record to 6-0.
Catherine Mueller led Freeland with three goals, while Megan Hemgesberg added two. Allie Maize, Paige Kloha, and Olivia Schultz each contributed a single goal, while Allie Maize and Mia Nietzke each contributed two assists. Mueller, Alyssa Stevens, and Mollie Johnson each contributed an assist.
Macy Smith, Paige Riffel, Kendal Ferchau, and Hailee Martinez-Hines of the defensive line aided Freeland achieve the shutout.
Monday, 6-2 overall Freeland will travel to Bay City John Glenn for another TVC matchup.
Soccer
Millington earned its first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory over Ithaca. Naomi Williams and Sydney Livingston scored for the Cardinals, while Williams and Charlotte Ratza assisted on the goals.
Softball
Reese defeated Bay City John Glenn 7-6 and 13-1, sweeping the Bobcats. Mallory Stack and Sydney DuRussel each contributed two hits, while Jerzie VanOchten led the offense with two doubles and two RBIs. Keira Campbell led the Rockets with four RBIs in the second game, while Hailee Esckelson drove in two more runs.
Bullock Creek defeated St. Louis 9-3 and 13-11 to capture the Tri-Valley Conference. Mattie Midkiff hit two home runs and drove in four runs in the opening game. Grace Stern had three singles while Maddie Bass and Hannah Hycki each hit a home run.
Midkiff also earned the victory, allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. St. Louis’ Izabelle Hrabal and Payton Kuhn each recorded two singles. Emmah Hansen led the Bullock Creek offense in the second game with four hits, including a home run. Bass and Lillian Wassman homered as well. Hrabal scored a goal for St. Louis.
Mount Pleasant was swept in a Saginaw Valley League doubleheader by Midland High, 12-2 and 21-14. The offense of Midland High was nearly unstoppable. Grace Schloop struck out 13 batters and added two hits and four RBIs to claim the victory in the opening game. In the second game, Morgan Williams went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs in eight innings. The score was deadlocked 11-11 after seven innings, but Midland and Mount Pleasant each scored 10 runs in the eighth.
Baseball
Senior Night in Freeland saw Freeland sweep Ovid-Elsie, 12-2 and 10-0, in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. The opening game was won by Ryan Quackenbush, who allowed five hits and two unearned runs. Daniel Duley and Jacob Kowalski each collected two hits, and Duley drove in three runs.
Kowalski, whose basketball season was cut short by an injury, made his first start of the season in the second game, tossing five innings of hitless ball with 10 strikeouts. The no-hitter was accomplished by Brady Shavrnoch in the sixth inning. Colin Dee led the Falcons’ offense with three hits, while Kaden Gerzseny, Connor Lasceski, and Quackenbush each contributed two hits.
Heritage improved to 12-5 with victories of 12-0 and 20-5 over Flint Carman-Ainsworth. Heritage’s Nate Baskins started the game with a five-inning no-hitter, walking one batter and striking out nine. In the nightcap, JD Binder earned the three-inning victory.
Mount Pleasant defeated Midland High 4-3 in the first game of a Saginaw Valley League doubleheader, but Midland High earned a split by defeating Mount Pleasant 5-3 in the second game. Logan Borodychuk won the first game for Mount Pleasant despite allowing three runs on six hits over six innings.
In six innings, Brett Faccio sustained the loss for Midland after striking out twelve batters and walking one. In thebottom of the sixth inning of the second game, Faccio delivered the key hit, driving in two runs to break a 3-3 tie. Lane Kloha earned the victory for Midland by surrendering three hits, one walk, and zero runs while striking out three batters in 2 1/3 innings. For the Chemics, Adam Haag and Aidan O’Malley each recorded two singles.
Tennis
Grand Blanc defeated Midland High in its first dual match of the season, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Brooklyn Moore gave the 5-1 Chemics a 7-6, 6-4 victory, while Tega Kamatoy won at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
