Jimmy Garoppolo has officially left San Francisco and is prepared to begin the next part of his career wearing the silver and black of the Raiders. Sam Darnold will replace Jimmy Garoppolo and join Trey Lance and Brock Purdy on the 49ers in the West. Mike White, Case Keenum, and Jarrett Stidham have also joined new organisations.
Deshaun Watson will remain in Cleveland, but his contract with the Browns will be adjusted.
As for Aaron Rodgers, whose name has been extensively circulated in trade speculations despite not being a free agency, his future is uncertain.
At the start of NFL free agency, teams were permitted to negotiate and sign contracts with unrestricted free players. Quarterbacks dominated the headlines. The arrangements cannot be revealed until Wednesday, so individuals speaking on the condition of anonymity verified them to The Associated Press.
Garoppolo was the most prominent quarterback to switch teams.
He committed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders’ division rival, Las Vegas, to replace Derek Carr, who signed with the Saints earlier this offseason after being released by Oakland. Garoppolo’s deal contains a guarantee of $34 million.
The Broncos were among the biggest spenders, fixing their offensive line by signing tackle Mike McGlinchey from the San Francisco 49ers to a five-year, $87.5 million contract and guard Ben Powers from the Baltimore Ravens to a four-year, $52 million contract. Afterwards, Denver and former Arizona Cardinals defensive end Zach Allen agreed to a three-year, $45.75 million contract.
The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly come to terms with former Denver Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones on a three-year, $51 million contract.
The 49ers signed defensive lineman Javon Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million contract, while Patrick Mahomes’ new blindside protector, Jawaan Taylor, agreed to a four-year, $80 million deal with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Falcons signed former Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates to a four-year, $64 million contract. Vonn Bell, the Bengals’ other free safety, signed with the Panthers.
Chicago signed linebackers Tremaine Edmunds, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with the Buffalo Bills, and T.J. Edwards, a former Philadelphia Eagle. The contract is worth $72 million over four years, with $50 million of that amount guaranteed.
Bobby Okereke signed a four-year, $40 million contract with the New York Giants. And Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson was acquired.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – Chris Beard was hired by Mississippi as its basketball coach little over two months after he was sacked by Texas due to a domestic violence arrest.
Beard is a four-time conference coach of the year and the 2019 AP national coach of the year after leading Texas Tech to the national championship game.
Yet, his two-year stint at alma mater Texas was terminated in January, despite the fact that felony domestic charges were finally dropped on February 15. A prosecutor stated that his office concluded that the assault by strangulation/suffocation-family violence accusation could not be substantiated beyond a reasonable doubt.
After Beard’s arrest on December 12, Texas suspended him and dismissed him three weeks later.
Beard succeeds Kermit Davis, who was fired on February 24 after nearly five complete seasons with 74-79 record.
ATLANTA (AP) — Damon Stoudamire, a veteran NBA point guard, was hired as the next head coach of Georgia Tech’s floundering men’s basketball club.
The 49-year-old Stoudamire arrives to the Atlantic Coast Conference institution from the Boston Celtics, where he served as an assistant coach since 2021. This past weekend, the Celtics travelled to Atlanta to play the Hawks.
Stoudamire’s sole prior head coaching experience was for five seasons at Pacific, when he posted a 71-77 record. In 2020, he was the West Coast Conference’s coach of the year.
Georgia Tech quickly replaced Josh Pastner, who was dismissed on Friday following the Yellow Jackets’ 15-18 season and ACC Tournament second-round defeat to Pittsburgh.
In the past 13 years, Stoudamire’s programme has made only one NCAA Tournament participation.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The school stated that after four years and no NCAA Tournament participation, Aaron McKie will become a special advisor to the sports department.
McKie, who excelled at Temple under legendary coach John Chaney and had a lengthy NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, finished 52-56 in four seasons, including 16-16 in 2022-23.
BASEBALL
PHOENIX (AP) — Mike Trout smacked a three-run home run, Lance Lynn tossed five excellent innings, and the United States defeated Canada 12-1 in the World Baseball Classic with a nine-run first inning.
The game was cancelled after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule of the tournament.
In Miami, José De León and three relievers combined for a perfect game as Puerto Rico defeated Israel 10-0 in an eight-inning game called due to the mercy rule.
Yacksel Ros, Edwin Daz, and Duane Underwood Jr. secured the victory for Puerto Rico by not allowing a single baserunner. Nevertheless, the game will not be recorded as a perfect game in official WBC records since it did not last the full nine innings.
The United States improved to 2-1 and rebounded from Sunday’s 11-5 setback to Mexico. Canada succumbed to 1-1.
TOKYO (A.P.) Trevor Bauer has signed to terms with the Central League’s Yokohama DeNA BayStars.
The Los Angeles Dodgers released the 2020 NL Cy Young Award winner on January 12, three weeks after an arbitrator lowered his ban from 324 to 194 games, as issued by baseball commissioner Rob Manfred. The sentence followed a probe into the pitcher’s alleged domestic abuse, which he has denied.
SOCCER
NEW YORK (AP) – NEW YORK Gregg Berhalter is a possibility to continue as coach of the U.S. men’s national team after a law firm’s assessment concluded that he did not inappropriately hide information about a 1992 domestic abuse complaint involving the woman who would become his wife.
U.S. Soccer Federation’s assessment stated that Berhalter’s actions “certainly constituted the minor offence of assault on a girl.”
Berhalter’s contract terminated on December 31, and one of his assistants, Anthony Hudson, was named temporary coach on January 4. The coaching selection will be made after the hiring of a new athletic director.
