The American athlete has experience playing doubles and won a championship with his partner, Jannik Sinner, in the 2021 Atlanta Open. Their victory came in the category of mixed doubles. But, the former world number 17 feels that that is as far as it should go when it comes to the category, which means that the only people who should be able to compete in doubles competitions are those who are successful in singles competitions.
Reilly Opelka is still fighting to dethrone doubles tennis.
During his appearance on the Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast, Reilly Opelka suggested that a good idea for the ATP 250 and 500 level tournaments would be to cut the doubles line-up in half and conduct the fixtures during the final three days of the tournament. Reilly Opelka also stated that this would be a good idea for the ATP 100 and 200-level tournaments as well.
Reilly Opelka provided support for his assertion that there are “no doubles specialists” by drawing attention to the dominant runs in the category that were staged by singles players such as Jack Sock and John Isner as well as Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, who were the champions of the 2022 Australian Open doubles tournament.
