Prior to Friday’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fielding coach Jhonty Rhodes provided a few fielding suggestions for the team’s spinners.
In a video uploaded to LSG’s YouTube channel, Rhodes can be seen assisting spinner Krishnappa Gowtham with his fielding technique and giving him advice.
Rhodes pointed out Indian spinners’ throwing errors during fielding practice.
The coach stated that because the fielding time is only about 10 minutes compared to the bowling time of 1 to 2 hours, spinners become acclimated to throwing the ball in the same fashion as when bowling.
“Because he’s a spin bowler, and in India many batters and all-rounders are spin bowlers as well, and when you bowl spin, you take a short step to pivot so when you throw because when we do fielding, it’s only for about 10 minutes, but we bowl for like an hour or two, so his body thinks he’s still bowling, so he takes a short step, and he throws thinking he’s still bowling,”
He elaborated on how bowlers can adopt a more effective strategy to prevent injuries by stating, “So we’re attempting to make sure he’s taking a large stride and using all of his strength; otherwise, he’s forced to use only his upper body, and we don’t get injuries.”
