Pep Guardiola desires to replicate his success with Barcelona at Manchester City in Europe’s premier competition, but he acknowledges that form does not always matter.
Guardiola has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and four League Cups with City, but he has yet to achieve European success despite having won the trophy twice with Barcelona. Under Pep Guardiola, City have reached the Champions League quarterfinals in six consecutive seasons, with a highest finish of runner-up in 2021.
Guardiola told reporters on Monday that he “really” wanted City to win the Champions League.
“We wish to attempt. It is an honor to compete against Bayern Munich, a premier club. We are not going to take it for granted. We must compete in two events. Beginning tomorrow,” he continued.
“This query has been asked every season. We attempt every season. The opponents you encounter are also skilled and competitive. My desire is to relive it. We intend to compete, but this does not guarantee victory.
“Michael Jordan won six NBA championships; how long did he play?” 16.”
Ruben Dias concurred with his manager that the tournament was “unique” for City.
“We want to be a part of it and see it through. It will be a challenging encounter, but beating the greatest is what the competition is all about,” Dias told reporters.
“We are delighted to be here. Staying in competitions – the Premier League, the Champions League, and every cup – for as long as possible is the primary objective each season.
Last month, Tuchel took over as manager of Bayern Munich following the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann.
“I attempt to determine the caliber of all of their departments. It would have been challenging against Julian Nagelsmann, and it will be challenging against Tuchel,” said Guardiola.
“I’m not that attentive; I’m more concerned with what I do with my colleagues. The inventive manager Tuchel. Excellent buildup, strong connections between players, and excellent athletes who attack the open spaces.”
